Book Two: The White Crown

Bent on revenge, Menes, grandson of Ah-Mah, has trained twenty-five men in secret just east of where the river divides itself into two main branches on its way to the sea. The village of Nubt is taken with few casualties, but the hated Rahotep has fallen on his dagger, depriving Menes of his revenge.

Villages upriver and down hear of Menes’ victory and ask for protection from the new ruler. A loose confederation of villages comes under Menes’ command and he is called king.

Lagash, his best friend and husband to his sister Ah-nah, convinces Menes he needs a crown and finds an artisan, Meh-khem, to create it. Not everyone is pleased with the new king. The priests of Ra, condemned to silence and menial tasks by Menes, seethe with suppressed anger and plot their own revenge.

Suti, daughter of Lagash and Ah-nah, makes it her business to know all that happens in the Land of the River. She takes full advantage of the arrival of her great-grandmother Ah-mah, the inventor of foot reflexology, to discover family secrets. When the two of them are sent to the village of Nekhen to meet with Khufer, Suti uncovers the priests’ plot to kill the new Egyptian king. Will the white crown and the ceremony be completed by the appointed season? Will Menes survive the priests to become the first god-king?
